Part of the municipality of Marinha Grande, the village of Vieira de Leiria is located 14 kilometres from the municipal seat and 24 kilometres from the city of Leiria, the district capital. It is situated on the left bank of the Lis River and 4 kilometres from the coast, at the northern end of the Leiria Pine Forest.

Its name may derive from “vieiro” (metal), due to the abundant metallurgical industries in the region, or from the Latin term “vena-venae” (that which has a water conduit), or, according to popular belief, from the grooved shells known as “vieiras” that once existed on the extensive sandy beaches.
The first references to this village date back to the reign of King Dinis, when the first settlers established themselves near the mouth of the Lis River. It was elevated to the status of parish in 1740.

Over the years, this parish has managed to encourage people to settle there, not only by providing the conditions considered essential for their activities, whether in the industrial, commercial, agricultural or services sectors, but also through the ability to work and organise shown by its people.
